Hey there! My name is Shelleah Jackson, the new 9th grade English I teacher at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. I am incredibly excited about this upcoming school year because, similar to a 9th grade student, I am also transitioning into very different experiences. My origins are in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, which is a small town about 30 minutes outside of Philadelphia. Following high school, I received my bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. From Blue Bell to Pittsburgh, I have lived in Pennsylvania for all of my life until now, so I am brand new to Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as to Phillip O. Berry. Since I am new to the community I am eager to learn all that I can about students, parents, siblings, and each and everyone who impacts our students' lives. I encourage students and parents to suggest interesting things happening around town and in their various neighborhoods!
Our class motto this year is "The only lines we color inside are those we draw ourselves". The idea behind this motto is that, as a teacher, it is not my objective to teach students what to think, but rather lay the groundwork so they know how to think. Understanding how to develop intelligent and critical conclusions surrounding their own thought backed up with salient details is an important, useful life skill. High school is a crucial time for students as they begin to consider what the trajectory of their lives may be, and we would be remiss if we did not both lay the foundations of and practice the keys to long-term success in. Students will be responsible for content, but they will also be simultaneously building important skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and defending arguments.
I have a passion for generational uplift and global responsibility. Our job is not finished until we are certain that the next generation has been equipped with the proper tools to make this world better for themselves and all of those after them. I sincerely hope all students, parents, and community leaders will join us in this mission throughout the year! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns, or suggestions that you may have. I look forward to meeting you all!
